How to Plan an Iftar Party in Karachi: Timing, Menu and Setup

23 September 2026 | Religious events | By Syed Events Team

An iftar party is different from other events because the schedule is set by the azan. Guests arrive hungry and expect water, dates and food at exactly the right moment. A calm, organised iftar needs careful timing, a simple menu and enough staff for fast service.

Start with the timing

Confirm the maghrib time for your date, and plan arrival 30 to 60 minutes earlier. Have dates, water and sharbat on the tables before the azan, and keep starters ready to serve immediately. After a short prayer break, open the main meal in batches.

Choose the right venue

Homes, lawns, halls and office spaces all work. Pick somewhere with enough seating, shade or cooling for early arrivals and a clean area for prayer. For larger iftars, see our iftar party planning service.

Plan the menu

  • To break the fast: dates, water, sharbat and fruit chaat.
  • Starters: samosas, pakoras, chaat and rolls.
  • Main meal: biryani, karahi or qorma with naan.
  • Desserts and drinks: kheer, jalebi, tea or Kashmiri chai.

Keep portions modest at the start, since guests eat gradually after fasting. See iftar and sehri catering for menu ideas and timed delivery.

Arrange seating and service

Plan tables so guests can sit together, with elders and families near the prayer area. Use more serving staff or buffet lines than usual, so everyone is served quickly, and place drinks and dates on every table. Keep music out of the programme, and use sound only for announcements or recitation.

Corporate iftars

For companies, plan seating by team, a short welcome speech and a calm agenda. Provide packed boxes for staff who must leave early, and invoices for the company. We also arrange corporate event management for larger iftars.

Sample iftar run sheet

  1. 3:30 pm: setup and sound test complete.
  2. 4:30 pm: guests begin to arrive, welcome drinks served.
  3. 5:15 pm: dates, water and sharbat placed on tables.
  4. At the azan: guests break their fast with dates and water.
  5. Soon after: starters served quickly, prayer break follows.
  6. After prayer: main meal opens, followed by tea and dessert.

Quantities and logistics

Plan dates, water and sharbat for every guest, with a buffer. Keep starters ready to serve in the first five minutes after the azan, since guests are hungry. Use enough staff or buffet lines to serve the main meal in batches, and have hot water and tea ready for after prayer.

Frequently asked questions

How many guests can an iftar host serve comfortably?

It depends on the venue and staffing. With multiple buffet lines and enough servers, hosts commonly serve hundreds of guests, but timing and queues need careful planning.

Can I hold a corporate iftar in an office?

Yes, if the space has enough seating and the company allows it. We plan seating, catering and cleanup, and we can provide packed boxes for staff who need to leave early.

What food should I avoid at iftar?

Very heavy or oily dishes can be uncomfortable after fasting. Start with dates, water and light starters, and serve heavier mains after the prayer break.
